As is customary for me, I try to provide an initial winter weather outlook around the first of September, just as we begin to think Fall. Why? It comes from my work experience in the private weather industry where critical planning for the upcoming winter takes place during September and October and that is when the winter outlook is so important. This includes the utility industry with regards to their planning on the amount of natural gas and heating oil will be required to heat our homes to local municipalities, state departments of transportation and the local snow plow operator...

GENEVA (AFP) Climate scientists must urgently look into changes in atmospheric currents linked to devastating floods in Pakistan and wildfires in Russia, UN climate and weather bodies said on Wednesday. Ghassem Asrar, director of the World Climate Research Programme, told AFP that changes, known as blocking episodes, can prevent humidity or hot weather dispersing. That intensified heavy rain or heatwaves and locked them over an area, he explained, potentially with a growing impact on extreme weather events that scientists expect to happen more frequently with global warming. Asrar said that European researchers had modelled the blocking pattern in atmospheric...

Roger Pielke Jr writes about scientists, and reporters, who attempt to link recently seen weather to evidence that man-made global warming is true: (h/t Tom Nelson) Let's see if I can make this simple. What happens in the weather this week or next tells us absolutely nothing about the role of humans in influencing the climate system. It is unjustifiable to claim that a cold snap or heavy snow disproves or even casts doubts predictions of long-term climate change. It is equally unjustifiable to say that a cold snap or heavy snow in any way offers empirical support for predictions...

Global TC [Tropical Cyclone] Activity remains at 30-year lows at least The last 24-months of ACE [Accumulated Cyclone Energy] at 1090 represents a decrease from the previous months and a return to the levels of September 2009. Since Hurricane Katrina (August 2005) and the publication of high-profile papers in Nature and Science, global tropical cyclone ACE has collapsed in half. Northern Hemisphere year-to-date ACE is nearing 50% below normal. The Western North Pacific is at 17% of normal (or the past 30-year average).

The eruption hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space, just missing a direct sun-Earth line. Forecasters expect the cloud to deliver no more than a glancing blow to our planet's magnetic field when it billows by on August 9th or 10th--not be a major space weather event. Future eruptions could turn out differently. Active region 1093 is rotating toward Earth. By the end of this weekend, we'll be in the line of fire if its magnetic fields become unstable again. Space Weather Phone subscribers will be the first to know.

Reports from the extreme cold weather affecting Argentina, experiencing its coldest winter in 40 years, make a mockery out of the claim that there is any man-caused global warming. While some areas of the earth are experiencing some local warming trends, the southern hemisphere is experiencing unprecedented cooling. There is no consistent global warming going on.
